(partially from my own records, partially extracted from the Google Groups archives)
I've had E-mail since September 1983, and got on the Internet in early April 1988.
Many of my 1988 postings are not in the Google database. I know I was posting quite a lot in 1988 and 1989, but found only a few postings from those years. In the late '80s and early '90s, I was also very active on GEnie, and, from time to time, somewhat active on AOL.
For many years on USENET newsgroups, it was common practice to have a "sign-off" at the end of your posting, and it was called a signature. This habit was lost in social media where brevity was key. Most of the URLs listed in these signatures have been moved, though a few are defunct; the current locations of many of them are listed at: http://www.dpsinfo.com/coa.html

Until the late '80s, an E-mail address sometimes included a path from one mail server to another.

In '93 we moved from Central Massachusetts to Southwestern Pennsylvania. Just after I moved, the deal on our Massachusetts house fell through (the buyers started making weird demands, so we pulled out). So I couldn't look for a really good tech job, I needed any job right away. I went to work for Borders and was responsible for shelving computer books. Found a way to get an E-mail address through a club at Carnegie-Mellon University.

Various things happened at CMU that fall, including the department I was part of kind of falling apart. At that time, if you said you knew HTML, you could sometimes make up to $30 an hour to code pages, so I decided to give independent contracting a shot.

I lasted about six months at ServiceWare - the commute was a killer and a new person became my direct supervisor whom I didn't really feel comfortable working for. But a job for a misc writer opened up at Lycos in downtown Pittsburgh. I also lasted about six months at Lycos. I wasn't fired, but I was tired of writing customer service letters to annoyed users who didn't understand why sometimes Lycos went months between updated its search databases. A few of us made suggestions for other services Lycos could offer; as we were merely workers, our ideas were ignored. Every idea some of us suggested to Lycos in 1996 later were adopted by Google, which is why Google is the search engine everyone uses and not Lycos.

During 1999, I completely burned out helping to convert the tagging of a manual set for a new publication system for Y2K (very long story that). I sometimes thought it would be great to do something different for a while, but I wasn't sure what. That spring, Leslie was unhappy in her freshman year of college. We told her she should stay and at least finish the semester. I told Jim I wanted to go back to college in the fall, and I went back to Pitt in August 2000. I almost immediately got apart-time Web job for the Undergraduate Research Program.

I graduated from Pitt in April 2001, sill had the part time Web job at Pitt and mostly worked on Program for the Millennium PHilcon. My plan was to look for a full time job starting in September 2001. That should be easy, right?

It's kind of ironic I never really updated this page after early 2003. As it turned out, I worked even more erratically after 2002 as I developed severe insomnia that nothing ever improved. So within a few years, I couldn't work full time. We were very lucky that Jim was only laid off for about a day in those years (another long story). Beginning in 2008, I mostly did movie/TV extra work, though spent a lot of 2010 doing Web support for a writer.
